Italia 2023- Day 5

Today we spent doing laundry and getting ready to go to Lucca tomorrow so there's very little to recap there, but here's some highlights:

- Apparently omelets here are DIY, because the hotel just brings you the egg and what you asked for in the omelet on the side. Some assembly required

- Galileo lived across from a laundromat-who knew?

- I was still full from the DIY omelet, but we popped in to the Mercato Centrale for lunch. Frankie ordered truffle pasta (I definitely helped eat that), and we had a couple of scampi that you could order a la carte, and when they were served they sort of looked like they were lounging around visiting with us instead of being eaten...

- We went to Santa Croce to look for our pigeon friend from before (Richard). We asked around and talked at length to this guy (Frankie decided his name was Henry, but we called him Hank cuz he's seen some things...).

He didn't seem to know Richard (we showed him pictures and video, which he dutifully studied-- he's a great guy that Hank-- rough exterior, but he's got a heart of gold), but he didn't show any sign of recognition, or call any others over, so I don't think he knows him, but we had a nice visit with him anyhow. We thought we found him as we were leaving, and it even seemed like he recognized us at first, but when we got a little closer he flew away. If it was him he might be still sore because we forgot to say goodbye last time...

- Frankie made me test my Italian by calling and making a reservation for dinner, which (if I can toot my own horn) went swimmingly, so now he makes me always make them. 🤣😅

- Had dinner at Bacco Matto (we ate there the last time we were here), and it was just as delicious as ever. We told the manager Daniele we'd been here before and our anniversary was a few days ago. He didn't remember us, but he brought us champagne to celebrate the anniversary, and insisted we make a video to show him next time so he'll remember us, so we did.

We had ravioli stuffed with cacio è pepe and topped with shrimp tartare, roasted octopus, beef tartare, and spinach. The beef tartare had capers on it and they were the biggest capers I've ever seen. All of them were "bring tears to your eyes delicious", but our favorite was the ravioli.

We had (of course) Cantucci è Vin Santo for dessert. Perfetto

- We'd heard about this drinking fountain in the piazza Della Signoria that serves Ice cold still and sparkling water for free, so we went to find it before dinner. The rumors are true and it's fantastic. (also took some pictures in the square)

Things we didn't forget, but still want to remember:

- We don't drink enough water here, so I brought a big insulated water bottle this time. We fill it up a couple times/day and refrigerate it so it's cold and we're doing much better at staying hydrated this time around.
